What is mOck Trial?
At its core, Mock Trial is a simulation of a real-life court proceeding based on a fictional case, which varies from civil to criminal each year. In August, we receive our case for the year from the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA). The case packet contains the briefing, numbered exhibits, witness affidavits & depositions, case law, and much more. Students take on the roles of attorneys and witnesses to argue the case, developing skills in public speaking, legal reasoning, and critical thinking. It blends law, performance, and strategy, offering a hands-on introduction to the courtroom experience in an intellectually engaging format. You don’t need to be an aspiring lawyer to join Mock Trial: just someone who’s ready to be challenged, step out of their comfort zone, and grow as a speaker, actor, writer, or all of the above!
Once we’ve made our teams, case theories, and scripts, we go to competitions around the country, where we compete against other schools and are judged by real-life judges, lawyers, former competitors, or other legal professionals. After a season of invitational tournaments, we transition to the AMTA season, which begins with Regionals in February, continues with the Open Round Championship Series (ORCS) in March, and concludes with Nationals in April.
Beyond the courtroom, Mock Trial builds a strong tight-knit community within the large Indiana University campus, bringing together people who push each other to be their very best, as competitors and as individuals.
